How Home Depot Clearance Markdowns Actually Work (From 200,000 Price Checks)

Updated October 9, 2026

The short version

Home Depot clearance usually drops in steps, not all at once. In our tracking the steps cluster around five levels: a first mark of roughly 10–25% off, then about 40–50%, then 60–65%, then about 75%, and finally 85% or more.

The catch is that most items never make the whole trip. Only about 1 in 5 items sitting at 50–65% off went on to reach 75% or more. The rest stayed where they were until they sold out.

Where these numbers come from

Spotted checks in-store clearance prices and stock at Home Depot stores every day. For this analysis we looked at more than 200,000 price changes over 60 days and followed individual items at individual stores from their first markdown to the day they sold out.

This is what we observed, not an official Home Depot policy. Stores have discretion, and the pattern is common but not universal.

How long each step lasts

The first markdown is the slow one: items typically sat at 10–25% off for two to three weeks.

After that it speeds up. The jump to 40–50% off is usually the single biggest drop, and items stayed there for three to seven days. The 60–65% step lasted three to four days, and the 75% step about three days.

When an item did go from 50% off to 75% off, the median wait was 11 days.

Should you wait for a deeper discount?

Usually not. Only 18.6% of items at 50–65% off ever reached 75% or more.

How long the item has been sitting matters. Items that had been at 50% off for under a week were the most likely to drop again (about 24%), because they were still moving through the markdown steps. Items that had been at 50% for four weeks or more dropped again only about 12% of the time; they had most likely settled at their final price.

So if something just hit 50% and you can afford to gamble, there is roughly a one-in-four chance it gets cheaper within a week. If it has been at 50% for a month, that is probably as low as it goes.

How long clearance stays on the shelf

A typical clearance item lasted 25 to 33 days from first markdown to selling out nationwide. Busy city stores sold out faster.

Once a store hit zero on a clearance item, we almost never saw that store restock it. Restocks did appear at some stores, mostly in Texas, Colorado, Florida and California.

Real examples

A garage LED light went 4% → 20% → 40% → 60% → 80% off over about 33 days. A bathroom vanity went 7% → 30% → 55% → 66% → 77% over about 34 days. An outdoor cleaner went from full price to 53%, then 75%, then 90% off over about 32 days.

Those are the items that completed the cycle. Most do not, which is why checking what is actually in stock near you beats waiting on a schedule.
