Where the stock comes from

Spotted checks the store inventory each retailer publishes for its own stores: units on hand and the shelf price at each store, item by item. Home Depot stores and Costco warehouses are checked at least daily. Lowe's, Walmart and Target clearance join the database once their store checks report clearance prices; until then they have no rows rather than guesses.

What counts as in stock

A store is listed for an item only when the newest check for that store and item is under 48 hours old, found units on hand, and found a clearance price. Older checks, sold-out checks and checks without a price are left out, so an item disappears from the database within two days of selling out or of checks stopping. Stock moves fast, especially at the deepest markdowns: confirm with the store before you go.

Prices and markdowns

Prices are per store; an item's row shows the lowest and highest price among the stores in your filter. "Was" is the regular price the retailer reports, and % off compares the lowest price with it. Home Depot items also show their step in Home Depot's usual clearance cadence, learned from 60 days of store-level price history:

Dropping soon

Home Depot marks clearance down in waves that reach some stores before others. When other stores have already taken an item to 75% off and it has been at its current step for one to four weeks, we mark it "next markdown likely". It is a forecast, right about half the time, not a promise.

What we leave out

We don't publish item numbers (SKUs) or aisle locations. Items without a usable product name are skipped. For resale values, see the flip database, which only uses real eBay sold prices.
